2007 Rookie Barrel Racing Champion

Bianca Hertel
Photo suplied by: Emma Wells
Bianca Hertel is just 14 years old and is leading her age group in the National standings of the Australian Bushman's Camp Draft and Rodeo Association (ABCRA) Championships, and taking on the Women as the newly crowned 2007 Rookie Barrel Racing Champion.

With city kids coming home from school settling in for an evening of video games, chatting online with friends, with an occasional game of football or tennis just to mix it up a bit. This country cowgirl is out stirring up dust in the back paddock pushing herself and her horse Splash to their limits.

Bianca trains her own horse and up and coming young horses before and after school were time permits. Spending 2 hrs a day on buses traveling to and from school doesn't dampen the enthusiasm of this pint sized cowgirls goals.

The Hertel families commitment to Bianca's drive to succeed is a credit to her. Traveling around Australia in a Truck and Gooseneck, carrying anywhere from 2 to 6 horses, to take part in all the Rodeos. They eat, sleep, shower and tend horses in this vehicle, all to get Bianca to the next event.

Rodeo event riding is all based on point scoring and winning as many Rodeos as possible to gain points for the over all tally at years end. It is a grueling combination of long hours of training and endless hours on the road. All for a 16 second winning ride.

With a nudge of her feet Bianca and her horse Splash are off out the gate round the first barrel, then round the second, making sure not to knock them over or loose points, then up to the end of the arena around another barrel and in a cloud of dust they fly to the finish line.

It's exciting to watch but don't blink, or you will miss them.

Bianca has grown up on their family property at Coonamble and has been riding since the age of 5. Competing at Pony Clubs and in Camp drafts but in Spring 2004 Bianca aged 10 discovered the sport of Rodeo. Bianca has not looked back and has been winning event after event over her 3 years of Rodeo competitions. In the last twelve months of competing she has won titles such as;

  • ABCRA 2007 11 to Under 14 Barrel Racing National Champion, 2 consecutive years running.
  • ABCRA 2007 Rookies Ladies Barrel Racing National Champion, youngest in history of Barrel racing in Australia to win this title.

On a World Standing;

  • Bianca is the second youngest in the world to win this Title, a girl back in the 1960's in USA was the only one younger.
  • 3rd in 2007 National point score for Ladies Open Barrel Racing. Australia wide.
  • ABCRA 2007 Southern Zone Rookie Ladies Barrel Racing Champion.
  • ABCRA 2007 Southern Zone 11 to Under 14 Barrel Racing Champion, for the 3rd consecutive year.
  • ABCRA 2007 Eastern Zone 11 to Under 14 Barrel Racing Champion.
  • ABCRA 2007 Bad Company Circuit 11 to Under 14 Barrel Racing Champion.

As Bianca's achievements are growing so does her desire and her 2008 goals are to win another ABCRA National Title and to qualify in the Australian High School Rodeo Team which travels to Gallup, New Mexico in June 2008.

With Rodeo Champion Buckles on her belt Bianca is setting her sites on the USA and raising $10,000 dollars to get there and compete.

Bianca's appreciation extends to her sponsors of 2007

Omega Feeds, Gunnedah
Frank Cross, Coonamble and

We wish Bianca all the best of luck in achieving her goals.
