Greenfest: Friday 10th - Sunday 12th October, Brisbane

Greenfest

GREENFEST: FRIDAY 10th – SUNDAY 12th OCTOBER, BRISBANE

Biological Farmers of Australia Event Media Release 6th October 2008

Organic Food Feast For A Cooler Planet – a 100% Certified First!

Greenfest, the largest free community green festival to hit the banks of Brisbane is set to win the hearts of ethical foodies as the first mainstream event in Australia to guarantee the organic origins of festival food.

Greenfest has enlisted the aid of the Biological Farmers of Australia Group (including organic certification arm ‘Australian Certified Organic’) to make sure sustainable food featured in the organic ‘Green Bake section is just that.

From Friday the 10th to Sunday the 12th October, Green Bake will provide nothing but food produced by certified organic farmers and operators, with an emphasis on local supply.

Visitors with an eco-conscious appetite can expect to be treated to everything from organic ice-cream, to the best of certified cheeses and yoghurt, to spelt waffles, fresh fruit, chemical-free beetroot chips, wine, and no-preservative BBQ meat.

With more people thinking about the origins of what they consume, vendors say the time has never been riper for wider public exposure to certified organic.

“There is no doubt organic is the environmentally friendly way to go for farmers,” says Ian Campbell, vendor and founder of the award-winning Barambah Organic Dairy company.

He and wife Jane moved towards organic systems in 1999, after becoming disillusioned with modern methods of food supply. “We now have beautiful, healthy animals on strong, natural pasture and I wouldn’t do it any other way,” says Ian.

“We hand-make our cheeses and our customers frequently comment on the taste – they say our products are sweeter and creamier than others, with no chemical after-taste.”

Luigi Barosso, a third-generation ice-cream maker from Italy, agrees.

“Most ice-cream is regarded as bad for you,” he says.

“Not so with organic – we create a wholesome dairy product, with pure, minimally processed ingredients and no cream, in a traditional fashion that parents can feel good about giving their children.

“Organic is also about reconnecting the next generation – they need to know there are cows and trees and life out there, and that food does not come from machines.”

All-natural flavours on hand over the weekend will include chococcino, bacio, ginger, green tea, macadamia, mango, passionfruit, vanilla & vanilla oat.

Dr. Andrew Monk, BFA Director, says inclusion of organic at the green event is recognition of the sometimes hidden benefits of organic food.

“Increasingly, people are starting to value what is not immediately observable – that food produced organically is part of a sustainable solution that addresses a range of challenging issues - from climate change, to lowered chemical run-off into waterways, land and soil health, to animal welfare.”
