Lifting The Lid
On Foreign Ownership Of Australian Agriculture

Lifting The LidFood security concerns in other countries for whom food supply is literally a matter of life and death may be leading to significant purchases of Australian farms and agri-businesses by overseas interests,” Leader of The Nationals Warren Truss said as his party led a Coalition victory in Parliament this week to uncover the extent of foreign ownership in Australia.

Carbon Tax
Must Not Comprise Food And Fibre Production, Say Farmers

Carbon TaxDespite the commitment to excluding agriculture’s direct emissions from its carbon tax, the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) continues to be extremely concerned about the Government’s emerging carbon policy plans. “It is sometimes misconstrued that because agriculture’s direct emissions are excluded from the Government’s carbon pricing plans, the sector will be unaffected,” NFF President Jock Laurie said. “This could not be further from the truth, even with a Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) offset scheme in place.

Government Has Backflipped
On Its NBN Promise To Regional Australia

Government Has BackflippedThe government has backflipped on one of its key promises to the regional independents by proposing to allow the National Broadband Network to charge different access prices to regional and rural Australians. Documents on the NBN legislation circulated by Communications Minister Stephen Conroy reveal the NBN Co could one day have the discretion to charge different prices for bush communities using wireless and satellite services than their city counterparts using fibre-optic cable.

Coles Defends Its Milk Pricing
In Submission To Inquiry

Coles Defends Its Milk PricingColes has told a Senate inquiry that its milk price reductions shouldn't have any effect on prices paid to dairy farmers. A written submission from the major retailer defends its decision to cut its own brand milk price to $1 a litre. In the submission, Coles says the lower milk prices are designed to give Australians a better deal on groceries. It says Coles did not intend to sell, and hasn't sold, retail milk below the commercial cost of acquiring it, and believes that there'll be no impact on processors' margins or returns to farmers.

AWB Sale Will Not Help Feed Australia!
The Sale Of AWB To US Agribusiness Cargill

AWB Sale Will Not Help Feed Australia! The sale of AWB to US agribusiness Cargill is not in Australia’s national interest according to the NSW Farmers’ Association - despite the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) giving it the go ahead. The Association is warning that the proposed sale will have a major impact on NSW grain producers by lessening the grain trading and logistics markets in this State.

International Weed Study
Could Aid Australia's Biosecurity

Dr Jennifer Firn from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) collaborated with 35 scientists in 39 locations throughout the world to test the "abundance assumption" about the spread of introduced herbaceous plants such as grasses, thistles and dandelions in grasslands.
