"Overhauling drought policy has never been seriously attempted because it´s hard. "It´s hard politically, it´s hard for farmers currently in drought and it´s hard to get the policy settings right. Yet, most agree politicians and farmers, alike that Australia needs to find a better way than the current drought relief model.

Supreme Court WinThe NSW Farmers´ Association says funding from the Association and the Australian Farmers´ Fighting Fund has helped secure a win for the Liverpool Plains farming community in the Supreme Court. The NSW Supreme Court found that BHP Billiton's licence to explore for coal on the properties of two Liverpool Plains farmers were invalid because the company had not consulted all landholders. "The previous mining exploration access agreement failed to put in place adequate protections for farmers, so to see it thrown out, providing some balance to the mining approval process is a great win for our Members," NSW Farmers´ Association President Charles Armstrong said.

TFGA Poppy Committee FormedWith an increasing number of Tasmanian poppy growers paying levies to the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association, the peak farmers´ body today, at the request of members, have formed a poppy committee to represent their interests. TFGA chief executive Chris Oldfield said the growers had prompted the move. Many of them are supplying the new player in the industry, Tasmanian Poppy Industry Enterprises, the only Australian-owned processor.
